Pastel green against the dull oaks and scrub brush of winter, the loblolly pine caught my attention and I paused to admire it. It stood alone of its kind at the forest edge, maybe ten years old, a youngster among trees. And yet, pines are among the most ancient of trees; the decision to drop leaves and go dormant, as do the oaks, the maples and others, is a botanical innovation. Pines and other evergreens use resin in their needles to survive the cold of winter, and that was an older idea.
