Pastor Lennys Study on Lent Day 9: Friday, March 14 Scripture: So then Pilate took Jesus and scourged Him. -John 19:1 Commentary: Christs suffering started before He was nailed to the Cross. The physical aspect of His suffering already started when He was in the hands of the local Roman authorities. And scourging was no minor thing. Anyone who has seen The Passion of The Christ will probably never be able to forget the brutality of the scene in which Jesus has His back torn up into a bloody pulp by this cruel device. The scourging is a good reminder that along with the dimension of great intensity, Christs suffering also had the dimension of extended time. We know from personal experience that we can tolerate even relatively severe pain if it only lasts a moment. But as the minutes and hours drag on, the experience of persistent pain can be unbearable. Jesus did not just take a bullet for us. When we say that He died for us, we are not just talking about the termination of His earthly life. His act of dying was a long, excruciating ordeal-and we cannot separate the length and intensity of this ordeal from its redemptive result. He chose to die this specific, horrible death in its totality in order to fulfill His redemptive purpose in its totality. Prayer: Dear Jesus, You are so good.
