Pastor Mikes Daily Devotion Friday May 8, 2014 John 6:5–7, Then Jesus lifted up His eyes, and seeing a great multitude coming toward Him, He said to Philip, “Where shall we buy bread, that these may eat?” But this He said to test him, for He Himself knew what He would do. Philip answered Him, “Two hundred denarii worth of bread is not sufficient for them, that every one of them may have a little.” What is your reaction when faced with an overwhelming task? Is it to have a mind to dig in, or a desire to bug out? The miracle of the feeding of the five thousand is seen in all four gospels, because it speaks of such a rich message of dependency upon the Lord. So, what happens if the Lord turns to you and asks you how you intend to meet the needs of a large group of His people? First of all, most of us would take the path of least resistance, just as Philip did. His solution to the problem was to send them away. To send people away is to not achieve the Lords purpose for the situation, but just to rid yourself of the burden. Others might analyze the problem at hand, and see if a solution is possible. Philip crunched the numbers, and came to the conclusion that even two hundred denarii would provide barely a bite of bread for each person. In times like this, instead of seeking more money or resources, what we should be seeking is more faith in what the Lord can do. It is after this that we see the Apostle Andrew do what needs to be done. He understands that the ability to feed all of these people is beyond him, and although he cannot do anything about that, he can do something. What Andrew does know how to do is to take what is available and bring it to Christ. There was a young boy there that day with the lunch of a person of meager means. It consisted of two small fish, and five barley loaves. As we take our humble offerings to the Lord, it is He who multiplies them and uses them to minister to His people. What do you have available for His service? Offer it to Him and see what He will do. Proverbs 10:21, The lips of the righteous feed many, But fools die for lack of wisdom.
