Pastor Mikes Daily Devotion Monday July 14, 2014 Romans 2:6–8, (God) who “will render to each one according to his deeds”: eternal life to those who by patient continuance in doing good seek for glory, honor, and immortality; but to those who are self-seeking and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness—indignation and wrath, That pretty much sums up my past religious life. I was taught that if I continued to be good and to do good I would have eternal life. If I was a bad person I would go to hell. The text here seems to back that up. What Paul appears to be saying is, if Im a good person I can go to heaven. There are two problems here. In my efforts to be good I find the better description of my life to be verse eight. I tend to be self-seeking, I have not always obeyed the truth, and I have sought after unrighteousness. If you break down the original language of verse seven you would see two distressing things. In verses nine through twenty he nails the coffin closed of every person who ever believed that they were good before God based upon their own works. The bible does not offer a false hope base upon what any person is able to do. The hope that we have is what Jesus Christ has done for us. Romans 3:21–22, But now the righteousness of God apart from the law is revealed, being witnessed by the Law and the Prophets, even the righteousness of God, through faith in Jesus Christ, to all and on all who believe. For there is no difference;
