Pastor talk: A door opens By Rev. Peter F. Hansen POSTED: 06/13/2014 12:26:07 PM PDT We grope for God, read about him, hear sermons, study scriptures. We pray to a God unseen. Then heaven peels back and God shows himself. A door opens ... To Adam, Noah, Abraham, Moses, Samuel — God opened a door from eternity into time, from perfection to the fallen, revealing himself. Isaiah saw God enthroned. Ezekiel saw a sapphire throne and God. St. John recounts visions: a door opens, and man sees God. God has, on occasion, opened the sky from his side. He said, I am that I am. We are created: once we were not. He is existence itself. And God made everything else. There is a designer wherever there is a design. Theres a problem. Were broken. We hurt each other, even ourselves. Again God breaks through the sky, becomes man. Its a desperate plan. Hes vulnerable. Jesus lives Gods life here. So we have two, Father and Son: then he shows us the spirit. The sky breaks again and Gods spirit, the giver of life, enters us. The spirit sets up his home in us and begins reclaiming us. The broken creature mends. There can only be one God. Yet God is three in one — a living, loving relationship: differing roles for each person. The father is initiator, and ultimate authority. The son obeys, the perfect reflection of his father. The spirit is life. God is. You are fallen, and need something you cant make, buy or become. Christ brings us to perfection. We are reborn. The spirit lives in you. Let him rebuild and use you. The end of all things is nearer than when we first believed. The holy, undivided, Trinity: reveals himself. Carry him into a ruined world. Dear Saint: they need you and what you know. Theyll see him in you. Rev. Peter F. Hansen is rector of St. Augustine of Canterbury Anglican Church in Chico.
