Pastors Moment: As you start the festive season, often the reflective part of the year, I challenge you to find time and encourage someone, give someone some hope. A story is told of a boy, Vincent Van Gogh wrote: “I feel instinctively that I am good for something, that there is some point to my existence….what could I be? What service could I perform?” As a young man he moved to Paris and became friends with a young Englishman with whom he studied the bible. He began working in a little church and occasionally taught the bible and preached sermons. Vincent however failed to go to theological school. In 1879 he was assigned to preach the gospel among the poverty stricken miners in Belgium. He had no one to encourage him. The church authorities gave a report saying that while he aided the sick and wounded, his ability to preach was lacking. As a result he was dismissed and he walked down the road bare feet discouraged and the children shouted “he is mad, he is mad.” Vincent gave up the ministry turned away from God and became an artist. He had no one to encourage him except his brother and in his lifetime he only sold one painting. During his last 70 days he painted 70 paintings. Loosing touch with reality he finally borrowed a pistol and shot himself. I wonder what would have happened if he had people to encourage him. 1 Thessalonians 5:10-11 Christ died for us so that, whether we are dead or alive when he returns, we can live with him forever. So encourage each other and build each other up, just as you are already doing. It does not matter how self confident you are, we all need people in our lives to encourage us. God’s word is filled with one encouragement after another because God knows that we all need encouragement. In fact encouragement is the gift that keeps on giving but the sad fact is that in this day and age we are becoming more and more selfish so much so that encouragement is becoming extinct. Like a water dispenser that spews out water, do you spew out encouragement or do you cut down people. When was the last time you encouraged somebody? Are you always looking for a compliment or are you always looking for someone to give one to? Do you see the potential and the best in others and are you willing to encourage them to bring it out or are you constantly negative? .Do you encourage and build up or do you tear down? My point is all that we have is each other, reach out and make someone smile this season. Listen to someone and assist if you can. Be there for someone. ************************* Finally brethren, Thank You very much for being part of the Pastors Moment.
