Pastor’s corner A deeper look at perfect love 1 John 4:18 “There is no fear in perfect love; but perfect love casts out fear, because fear involves torment. But he who fears has not been made perfect in love.” The definition to the word perfect is lacking nothing essential to the whole; complete of its nature or kind. The definition to the word love is a strong feeling of affection and concern toward another person, as that arising from kinship or close friendship. When you put these two words together you get a natural contradiction. We as humans cannot lack nothing and a strong feeling cannot in nature be complete without lacking anything. We must not put our earthly limitations on the biblical definition of perfect love. We must see the perfect aspect of the scripture as a Godly gift to us and we must see love as a perfect gift not based on merit. We by human nature lack the ability to be perfect and we can only love to our own ability. Perfect love from the Lord loves beyond our limitations and sets us free from fear. The definition of fear is a very unpleasant or disturbing feeling caused by the presence or imminence of danger. Fear is a feeling that comes over us and limits our ability to live our life. Love and fear are both defined as a feeling. We view the love of the Lord as a feeling to us but the love of God is not a feeling He has for us. The love of the Father is rooted in the sacrifice of Jesus Christ for us. God’s love is like a tree with roots that expand throughout the ground below it. God’s love cannot be uprooted or persuaded by our earthly emotions. His love is without flaws and cannot be moved by our inconsistencies. How does His love release us from fear? We are free from fear because we live in the security that I cannot effect the love of God towards myself. If I am secure in God’s love not based on works or merit; then I can feel confident to freely receive the promises of God in my life. Jeremiah 29:11 says the Lord has a plan of blessings on my life, so the fear of death and failure are defeated by the knowledge of God’s great plan for my life. The Bible says He will bless me with a long full life and in that understanding I live my life. If you fear anything it is only because you have not tasted His flawless love for you. You are so special to God that He does not want you to fear anything. You are firmly rooted in God’s love and your life is meant to be blessed and prospered in God’s abounded riches. Once you taste His perfect love you will never wonder if your life has meaning. He gives our life purpose and His sacrifice on the cross gives my life value and I live it more abundantly. Never let anyone define Gods love as inconsistent to you because He is beyond any flaws. He loves you by a standard that no man can take away from you. Live today in the blessings of the Lord! Scriptures to study on God’s blessings Psalm 91:16 “With long life I will satisfy him and show him my salvation. Jeremiah 29:11 11 For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. 2 Timothy 1:7 “For God has not given us a spirit of fear and timidity, but of power, love, and self-discipline.” Deuteronomy 7:13 “He will love you, bless you, and multiply you. He will also bless the fruit of your womb and the fruit of your ground, your grain and your wine and your oil, the increase of your herds and the young of your flock, in the land that he swore to your fathers to give you.”
