Patient Status: 14-1211 Big Cypress Fox Squirrel or Mangrove Fox - TopicsExpress

Patient Status: 14-1211 Big Cypress Fox Squirrel or Mangrove Fox Squirrel The medical staff at CROW received a surprise in this mornings intakes; they opened the container to find a squirrel much larger than the Eastern Gray species normally seen in the hospital. Contrary to two common names sometimes given (Mangrove Fox Squirrel and Everglades Fox Squirrel) the Big Cypress Fox Squirrel is not common in either mangroves or Everglades. They are most common in open pinelands, live oak forests, and stands of bigger bald cypress. The patient was admitted due to trauma sustained after a vehicle collision; the photos below are during the diagnostic testing. Hospital Director Heather Barron is preparing the patient for radiographs, and Wildlife Rehabber Jordan Enrique is administering subcutaneous fluids while the patient is anesthetized. The prognosis appears to be good and the patient is recovering in CROWs intensive care unit of the hospital.
