Patients face hardships in paid rooms of SMHS hospital Shabeer Ahmad They Are Better Managed In Wards, Says Principal GMC Srinagar, Aug 6: Patients who opt for paid rooms in SMHS hospital here have to face immense hardships. Talking to Greater Kashmir one of the attendants, whose father is admitted in paid room of the hospital, said, “ The doctors designated for the paid facility are reluctant to attend patients in odd hours and in case of emergency patients are left to fend for themselves.” Muhammad Afzal Khan, a patient admitted under MRD no 109913 in the room No. 6 of the Paid Ward block of the SMHS hospital developed serious complications. His attendants said they rushed the patient to Emergency section where a junior doctor on duty declined to treat the patient saying, “ Do you people think you are some VIP that you opt for paid room. Now you better look for some similar contacts for treatment.” The attendants said the doctor’s response shocked them and they subsequently rushed the patient to Ward 18 were doctors finally attended him and his condition stabilized. An attendant with the patient said: “ We had booked the paid room hoping that the patient will get better care, but the doctors avoid visiting the separate room leaving patients in a lurch.” However, officials denied that doctors ignore the patients admitted in the paid rooms. “ Patients are better managed in wards. We too advice people that if patient is serious or critical paid ward should be avoided. But it doesn’t mean we ignore any patient,” said Principal Government Medical College Dr Rafiq Pampori.
