Patriotism is fueled by a range of psychological needs that originate in childhood, most importantly needs for security and connectedness. To the extent that such needs are frustrated in families and in everyday social life, patriotic symbols offer symbolic and compensatory gratifications. Such gratifications can and are manipulated by groups on both sides of the political spectrum to advance their agendas. (Phi Delta Kappan, 2006)
