Pau Casals i Defilló, known during his professional career as Pablo Casals, was born on December 29, 1876 in Catalonia, Spain. Casals is known as the per-eminent cellist of the early 20th century. Best known for his recordings of the Bach Cello Suites (which I try to always have in stock at the store!). Casals did not live to see the end of the Franco dictatorial regime in Spain, but he was posthumously honored by the Spanish government. Albert Einstein said of Casals “What I admire is the firm stand he has taken not only against the oppressors of his countrymen, but also against those opportunists who are always ready to compromise with the Devil. He perceives clearly that the world is in greater peril from those who tolerate or encourage evil than from those who actually commit it.”
