Paul Boden became homeless at age 16. In 1983, he began volunteering at a San Francisco shelter, where he eventually became a program director. He later served as exec director of the citys Coalition on Homelessness for 16 years. Hes also a founder of the Community Housing Partnership, a nationally recognized permanent housing corporation, and was a board member of the National Coalition for the Homeless, co-chairing its civil rights and grassroots organizing workgroup. Boden is director of the Western Regional Advocacy Project, created to eliminate the civil and human rights abuses of people experiencing poverty and homelessness, and author of House Keys Not Handcuffs.
