Paul Bushell was born 1768 in Warwickshire, England to (Alfred Bushell and Jane Sharp), and died 5th February 1853 in Wilberforce. He arrived in New South Wales on 26 June 1790 on The Surprize (part of the Second Fleet) as a convict. The Surprize was one of the notorious Second Fleet ships to Port Jackson. At 400 tons, it was the smallest ship of the fleet, and was an unsuitable vessel for so long a voyage, proving to be a wet ship even in moderate weather. In rough seas and heavy gales the convicts were considerably above their waists in water, according to the commander of the guards. Paul Bushell married Isabella Brown 3rd June 1822 in Wilberforce. Isabella Brown was born 1801 in Wilberforce, to David Brown and Eleanor Fleming. Although married to Paul Bushel Isabella had a relationship earlier with a Richard Rowe and had one child to this union.
