Paul Hughes Kindly posted this regarding a comment James Ogburn made about remembering a Hole found in Summer Lane Halton Village. The hole(see attached photos) is believed to be an Ice House that once belonged to the Seneschals House at the top of Halton Brow. It was unearthed by builders who were building an extension at the rear of my parents former home @ number 12. As a wagon was swinging its crane jib while lifting a pallet of bricks, the wheels of the wagon began to sink into the road, when the builders moved the wagon & began to investigate they uncovered a sandstone arch. During the rest of the day, architects & surveyors from Cheshire Council & Norton Priory Museum investigated further & came to the conclusion that it was probably an Ice House that may have belonged to the Seneschals House, they think that it was last uncovered during the construction of the house in 1928. Due to the risk of the road collapsing the council put shuttering down to cover the entrance way & filled the gap between the arch & road with concrete. The interior had an arched ceiling & steps at the rear leading upwards, it was approximately 10ft long, 7ft wide, 5ft high & was located directly under the front garden. Please look at my extremely impressive diagram below Red Line: 12 Summer Lane Boundary Blue Line: Ice House Green Line: Archway To Ice House Yellow Line: Former Cart Horse Road/Path
