Paul James Fulsom (August 11, 1925 - November 20, 2013) PAUL JAMES FULSOM, 88, of Cedar Vale, Kansas, passed away Wednesday morning, November 20, 2013 at his home. Born August 11, 1925 in Okemah, Oklahoma, he was the son of Louis Edward and Blanch (Cherry) Fulsom. He was raised and received his education in Okfuskee County, Oklahoma, graduating from Nuyaka High School in 1943. Paul was united in marriage to Frankie Carlisle on September 16, 1948 in Tulsa, Oklahoma. He had just been discharged from the United States Army. Paul began cowboying at the Oliphant Ranch in Foraker. In December of 1949, the couple moved to Grainola, Oklahoma where they started a cattle herd of their own and their family grew to two boys and two girls. In July of 1957 they moved to Maple City, Kansas, and a month later Paul landed a job at the Arkansas City Flour Mill and they added Penny to the family. In August of 1960, they bought their farm on Otter Creek in rural Cedar Vale, Kansas, and added two more girls to the family. In 1963 Paul went to work for his brother Joe in construction for about a year, and in 1964 he and Frankie started their own company, fencing and seeding along state highways, Paul J. Fulsom, Inc. In 1972 the couple bought the Holman Motel, moved the family in, and while Frankie ran the Motel, Paul continued working construction. In 1979 they moved to their current residence northeast of Cedar Vale. In 2000 Paul retired from the construction company and sold it to his two sons, Paul Jay and Perry. He was an active member of the First Baptist Church in Cedar Vale with faithful attendance. He served as Deacon, taught Sunday school classes, served as head ushers for many years and served on trustee boards. Paul received various KDOT plaques and the Pioneer Award. His family includes: His wife: Frankie Fulsom of the home; His children: Patti Painter and husband, Darryl, Pamela Juul and husband, Sam, Paul Jay Fulsom, Peggy McAdam and husband, Fred, and Priscilla Melton and husband, Clay all of Cedar Vale, Perry Fulsom and wife, Carla of Grenola, and Penny Weaver of Winfield; His brother: Joe Fulsom and wife, Jeanie of Dexter; His 27 grandchildren and 47 great grandchildren. In addition to his parents, Paul was preceded in death by three sisters, Norma Oaks, Clara Fincannan, and Lois Dean Heath, and his granddaughter, Rachel Fulsom. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 A.M., Saturday, November 23, 2013 at the First Baptist Church in Cedar Vale, Kansas. Interment will follow at the Cedar Vale Cemetery. A visitation will be held on Friday, November 22, 2013 from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. at the First Baptist Church in Cedar Vale. Memorials have been established in Paul’s name in lieu of flowers, for the First Baptist Church in Cedar Vale and for Harry Hynes Hospice in Coffeyville. Contributions may be made through Miles Funeral Service in Winfield, Kansas.
