Paul Revere Dick, the leader of 60s rock group Paul Revere and the Raiders passed away Saturday in Caldwell, Idaho. He and original lead singer Mark Lindsay formed the band originally called The Downbeats in 1958. Paul was in his early 20s, but already owned several restaurants in Caldwell. Mark, then 16, worked at the bakery that supplied Pauls restaurants. They became Paul Revere & the Raiders on the eve of the release of their first record in 1960 and had some regional success in the Pacific Northwest. There is some debate as to who recorded the frat house favorite Louie Louie first, the Raiders or the Kingsmen. They both recorded it in the same Portland, Oregon studio in April of 63. The Raiders hit the big time in the 1965 backlash to the British Invasion, ironically dressed as colonial soldiers. The groups mid-60s hits included Kicks, Hungry, Good Thing, Him or Me - Whats it Gonna Be?, all of which charted in the top 10. A regular on the teen music show Where the Action is, the groups music was becoming out of step in the psychedic era as all the original members except Paul and Mark left. But with Lindsay now producing their records, they stayed relevant with hits including Im Not Your Stepping Stone, Let Me and Lindsays final Raiders hit, recorded as a solo, Indian Reservation. Reveres later nostalgia act with all new group members in the 80s through the early part of this year relied heavily on comedy, as this clip shows. A great showman, Paul Revere will be missed by generations of music fans. youtube/watch?v=tWsXEVMZY0M
