Paul did not dramatize the cross to move his hearers, hoping by his eloquence to make the event glaring and real and to turn pagan sinners into Christian saints. How could it? There has to be a great power involved. Paul preached what the death of Jesus Christ was about, that he died redemptively, our sins carrying away. It made Paul what he was: “I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me” (Gal 2:20). The gospel is not good news that Christ died, but that he died for us, died our death, blocked the judgment of God against us and released us from condemnation. The power of the cross was far more than its emotional effect. Something went on at the cross that nothing else could achieve. Only Jesus is the Savior of the world. God bless you. REINHARD BONNKE
