Paving the way for a massive trapping site at Mellieha,right next door to the Ghadira bird sanctuary A guy has been apprehended whilst clearing the dense garigue site of vegetation using a blowtorch and a LPG gas cylinder, besides bulldozing the site so as to give the impression that it is being used for agriculture The site is one of the last few haunts of the giant orchid, besides harbouring endemics like the Maltese fleabane, the Maltese spurge and a number of other orchids - I wonder how many of these protected species are still on site after the guys action and I wonder what restoration work on site will be imposed by MEPA/the police, at the expense of the perpetrator of course For those who reported the degradation seen in these photos - KEEP STRONG!!
