Pawing before lying down - a comforting ritual - You can see that look in their eyes ok, Im going to turn around four times, paw six times, lie down, sigh, and fall right to sleep. Before dogs had comfy fluffy beds to lie on, they would rearrange the ground a bit to create comfortable hollows. They are creatures of habit, and tend to do the same things theyve always done. Dogs are territorial animals, and one way of marking their territory is to scratch at the ground. They have scent glands in the paws ! Females may be somewhat more likely to paw than males before lying down, especially if they happen to be pregnant - its a biological urge to prepare a safe and comfy nest. Some dogs have every intention of making a real bed, and theyll shred cushions and wear away patches of carpet in order to get it just so. Since you cant stop them from pawing, youll have to work out ways to accommodate the instinct without sacrificing the house. To give the most pawing satisfaction, you may want to get a bed made from loose fill, cedar chips for example, which gives them the opportunity to move filling around when they paw, which is closer to what theyd experience naturally.
