Paying fair wages does not necessarily mean paying government - TopicsExpress

Paying fair wages does not necessarily mean paying government mandated wage. Even in a small, rather easy to learn business, there are a lot of variables that determine employee worth. For example, how helpful is the employee to customers? Is he/she punctual? Knowledgeable? Like economic goods, services have a market value, that take many factors into account. In the case of services, paying too far under will result in losing and employee to another employer. Paying too much will result in a cost that is higher than competition and could result in job loss and even cause the business to go under. Here in America, we have lost jobs to foreign competition that can do the job cheaper. Obama promised to stop the out-sourcing of jobs when he ran in 08 but the problem has only gotten worse. Recent statistics show a 17% increase in poverty since 09 when Obama, a staunch advocate of minimum wage increases, took office. Not to mention unemployment rates that have been kind of high. If all it takes is a minimum wage law, to up the living standard of our most unskilled workers, why only $10 an hour? Why not $20, $30 or $50? Lets make it really comfortable for these workers. Another factor is the freedom factor. If an employer and an employee agree on a wage, why should anyone else, including the government interfere?
