Peadar Joe Haughey School– 16th October 2014 The last native speaking Seanchaí in the Parish of Termonmaguirk, Co.Tyrone. The Peadar Joe Haughey Summer School is entering into its 8th year and is expected to guarantee another wide and varied programme for those interested in the Irish language, Irish traditional music, traditional singing, Local Place names, with contributions from other Gaeltacht areas. It all takes place in the home of Peadar Joe Haughey, the last native speaking Seanchaí in the Termonmaguirk Parish. This year the event takes place over the following weekends: Thurs 16th – Sunday 19th October, and Saturday 25th – Sunday 26th October. Peadar Joe when interviewed once said, ‘Ah, but I miss that neighbour of mine. Since he went to his rest there’s not a living soul outside the walls of this house fit to talk to me in Irish now...’ He would be so happy to see so many Irish speakers and those interested in Irish Language and heritage coming on their céilí to his wee house in Creagan, coming together to sing, play music, talk Irish and enjoy each other’s company – oíche airneáil cheart (a proper ceilí house)! He would be especially happy to see the Gaeltacht Night on Friday 17th October take place. There will be Sean Nós Singing from the heart of the Gaeltacht areas as well as local Irish language singers from Tyrone and surrounding areas. All Gaeilgeoirí especially welcome. The participants are really looking forward to the talk by Dr.Kay Muhr on the Tyrone Gaeltacht Heritage on Saturday 25th October at 11am. Dr Kay Muhr was a senior researcher of the Northern Ireland Place Names Project, in the Celtic Studies Dept. Of Queens University Belfast from 1987 until it ceased in 2012. Her talk will discuss place names in the Tyrone Gaeltacht, and will give in depth knowledge on how to research our own local place names. This will be followed by discussing the possibility of developing a Map of the Tyrone Gaeltacht. The Tyrone and Wider Gaeltacht area of a hundred years ago was geographically and in terms of population the largest in Ulster outside of Donegal and should be celebrated – all interested people welcome. This year’s summer school follows on from the highly successful summer school last year with such highlights as the highly informative talks by Dr Diarmuid Ó Doibhlin on the late Fr Ciarán Devlin, native of Rouskey, and Fr John Fox PP Newbridge a native of Granagh, on his book, The Fields of Carrickmore. Attendees last year especially enjoyed the talk by Linda Ervine, sister-in-law of the late David Ervine on ‘The Irish Language in East Belfast’. Linda runs five classes a week, with an intake from the bottom of the Shankill to near the top of the Newtonards Rd and other parts of East Belfast. Her talk was so spell bounding she received a standing ovation such was the reception. Linda afterwards expressed how she felt privileged to be invited, looked forward to be back again, expressing the sentiments of previous participants. Francis Clarke, grandson of Peadar Joe Haughey and organiser says this is a reflection of the roots of the summer school, also leaving space aside to reach out extending a special welcome to share through Irish. You will be offered a warm welcome to this beautifully restored home, bring along your instruments, your song books and your friends! Guaranteed craic, ceol agus cuideachta.
