Pedro Pan Omar Maden arrived in Camp Matecumbe at age 15 in 1962. Shortly thereafter he was relocated to Portland, Oregon, where he lived in group homes with Cuban foster families associated with the Diocese of Miamis Cuban Childrens Program. After graduating from Benson Polytechnic High School, he was drafted into the US Army, where he rose to the rank of major, received a Purple Heart for an injury received when his helicopter was shot down, and was awarded numerous medals and decorations. He also spent four years at the Pentagon, served as deputy director of the Tactical Air Control Systems/Tactical Air Defense Systems joint interface task force and was a U.S. delegate to the NATO Allied Data Systems interoperability Agency in Brussels, Belgium. Between 1972 and 1976, while he was still in the armed forces, he attended college and graduated with a triple major: Economics, Political Science and Spanish. After serving 12 more years in the armed forces, he retired and embarked on a business career by founding Maden Technologies in 1986, a company with annual revenues well over 100 million.
