Peel police killing that young black man in Brampton the other day, and you having heard nothing about it on the news should be very telling about the way Canada deals with racism. Its sharp here, clean and swift. Its discrete, and almost unnoticeable, to the privileged. Whereas in the united states there are platforms to speak on racism - there is no place for this conversation in canada. Theyve killed a boy, theyve killed many young boys and girls - theyve systematically condemned them to a life of oppression and marginalization through education, housing, justice, employment & media. Yet, were quiet about it. Hesitant even to have local conversations. Scared that the bits of privilege weve been given will be stripped away once we speak our minds. Where are my tears right now? Where are the riots and vigils and gatherings? Where is the media coverage? What are you doing about this? The most dangerous thing for a slave to believe is that they are free. Welcome to Canada folks.
