Pegasus Bridge Counter Attack: After eventually taking Pegasus Bridge with an Airborne Assault, the US Paratroopers prepared for the inevitable German Counter Attack. The 82nd Airborne made good their defences on the East bank of the river, with units from the 101st Airborne Division hurriedly crossing the bridge to setup a 57mm Anti-Tank Gun and an M18 Hellcat Tank Destroyer deployed on the far West bank to provide armoured support. The German Counter Attack was swift, but was caught out as the trucks carrying the Fallschirmjäger units came under heavy fire from the entrenched US Paratroopers. A Panzer IV Tank was quick brought up to suppress the Anti-Tank Gun and surrounding troops. Rallying, the Assault Engineer Squad deployed a flamethrower unit at the bunker, which was followed by German Fallschirmjäger assaulting the remaining US Paratroopers to gain a solid foothold on the East Bank. The M18 Hellcat moved across the bridge to take on the German Panzer IV, but with shells bouncing off the German armour, it made a hasty retreat under heavy fire. A long range shot across Pegasus Bridge put an end to the US Tank support, which provided the impetus for the remaining German forces to storm the bridge. Hand to hand fighting and chaos ensued as the German Fallschirmjäger units intermingled with the remaining US Paratroopers. With no clear winner, the fighting continued, but both sides were now in contact with Armoured Tank Units and Air Support, the battle was about to become fiercely contested, as whoever owned or destroyed the bridge could impact the success or failure of the D-Day landings.
