Pellets take another youth’s eyesight ‘Policemen Fired At Me From Short Distance’ Srinagar, July 15: Ajaz (name changed) aspired to be an Economist but as his ill-fate had it, on Sunday he became another victim of deadly pellets fired by police at Nowhatta here which damaged both his eyes. Ajaz is studying Economics at New Delhi and had come to spend Ramadhan with family. Ajaz was returning home from an Islamic congregation at Parraypora when pellets hit him amid protests, stone pelting and police action. He has been shifted to Ophthalmology Ward of SKIMS medical college Bemina with both his eyes affected. Writhing in pain and barely able to speak, Ajaz narrates his ordeal amid sobs. “I was returning home when policemen fired pellets on me from a short range. I fell unconscious and don’t know what happened thereafter,” he said. “Please don’t write my name as it would land me in more trouble,” the youth pleaded, fearing harassment by police. He breaks down and starts crying loudly asking for help from Allah and pondering about his future without eyesight. His family members are yet to recuperate from the shock. “We had never thought that such a tragedy would befall our family. Our son had gone for an Islamic congregation at Parraypora and we were waiting for his return. But all of sudden we got a message that he has been injured with pellets and when we saw him in the hospital we could not believe our eyes,” said a family member. “His one eye is completed damaged with retina smashed out and second is also badly affected,” he said. “We have referred his case to AIIMS for further treatment as the injury seems to be grievous. One eye has a retina damaged and other eye has developed blood clot. Our team collectively decided to refer him to AIIMS for further medical assistance,” said a medico attending him at SKIMS Bemina. Pertinently, the death of a Kashmiri youth, Pervaiz Teli of Nawab Bazar, in Mumbai had sparked protests and clashes in old Srinagar leaving half a dozen persons injured on Sunday.
