Penalty Shoot Out Defeat for Dogs The Bradfield Brewery Sheffield Steeldogs were without Andre Payette, Craig Elliott and Tom Barry for the home game with the Peterborough Phantoms. It was a fast paced game from the drop of the puck, to the final buzzer. With the Steeldogs in early penalty trouble, Lubomir Korhon found a gap in the Phantoms defence on a penalty kill but couldnt quite find a way past Auzins. There were scoring opportunities but the net minders weren’t called on to make many saves in the first period as chance after chance went wide of the nets. Play moved quickly from defence to attack and chances kept coming at both ends of the ice, Luke Ferrara found himself with a gilt edged chance at the back post but couldnt hit the target. The major incident of the first 20 came at 17.43 when Auzins’ theatricals earned Cam Brownley a 5+game penalty for slashing. Callum Pattison received a misconduct penalty on the 20 minute marker as the teams made their way off the ice. Into the second period and Sheffield continued to kill the five minute major but Baranyk benefitted from a 3 on 2 break just after the penalty finished. He scored after passes from Luke Ferrara and Slava Koulikov set him up to put the puck in the back of the net. The game proceeded with a slightly frantic edge with both net minders hearing the ping as pucks hits posts but stayed out. Having killed a penalty the Dogs pushed on and good work from Calvert and Wood set up Lloyd Gibson to equalise at 32.45. The period ended with a 1-1 score line. Going into the 3rd period the game continued at pace and on 43.06 and with Haywood in the box, Baranyk took a quick shot from close in to beat Sedlar, putting the Phantoms back in the lead by 2 goals to 1. The Steeldogs continued piling on the pressure in search of an equaliser. In to the final 10 minutes and Hirst pounced on a chance created by Korhon but found the post. The clock was ticking down and Sedlar made his way to the bench to get the extra skater out into the game. With just 36 seconds to go Jeff Legue finally got just rewards as he fired through a crowd in front of Auzins to tie the game. The Steeldogs continued sending players forward into the attacking zone and they were camped in there for most of the OT minutes. 2 minutes into OT the Phantoms were penalised for icing too many imports but the Steeldogs couldnt quite scramble the puck past Auzins in the power play. Onto the Shootout – Peterborough stepped up first and Baranyk scored, Lubo follows as the first round shooter and also puts the puck into the net. Round 2 and Peterborough score followed by Tom Squires who missed his shot. Next up Luke Ferrara for the Phantoms, whose shot was saved by Sedlar. Jeff Legue skated taking the puck towards Auzins who collected the puck and gave Peterborough the win 2-3. The post-match awards were handed to Luke Ferrara of Peterborough and Tom Squires for the Steeldogs. The Bradfield Brewery Sheffield Steeldogs will be playing in Telford on Sunday and travelling to Bracknell and Billingham next weekend.
