Peninsula Tiger Snake (Notechis ater niger); sunning itself amongst limestone shrubbery at Cape du Couedic, Flinders Chase NP; recent taxonomic/molecular/DNA scientific studies have shown that the Black Tiger Snake (Notechis ater) to be morphologically and genetically similar to the Eastern Tiger Snake (Notechis scutatus) and that they ought to be classified as one species-N. scutatus; this wide ranging and extremely variable super species would then be divided into a suite of geographically separate subspecies; however, at this point in time, the old classification is still in popular use.
