Pennsylvania American Water announced today that customers in the Southside of Scranton and Greenwood section of Moosic no longer have to boil their water before use. Acceptable bacteria test results were obtained from samples collected on February 1 and 2, and the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection has authorized lifting of the precautionary advisory. This notice applies to approximately 6,500 customers in Southside Scranton and Greenwood section of Moosic who lost water service during repairs to the 36-inch transmission main. Customers might continue to experience cloudy or discolored water. This discoloration is caused by air bubbles and riled up sediment in water lines. Customers should run the cold water faucet at the highest point from where the water enters their home, and allow the water to run for only a few minutes until it is clear. Avoid excessive flushing, which typically stirs up more sediment. The boil advisory was issued February 1, due to a broken 36-inch transmission main along River Street in Scranton. Pennsylvania American Water thanks its customers for their patience and cooperation during this event.
