As a marcher, it was wonderful to see your support for our community and I particularly enjoyed seeing the SBS staffer float. I would like to give you some constructive feedback for next year’s coverage. The coverage did not broadcast the whole parade. There were many people who waited in vain to see their float displayed on your programme who missed out on coverage and were disappointed. Given that you have several digital channels, you could have quite easily run a highlights show on SBS 2 and a full coverage show on SBS 3. The cameras would have been rolling for the whole time, so the raw footage would have been available. This approach is not unprecedented. Each year you run a full version of the Eurovision song contest and a highlights version. You play many dozens of sporting matches (eg the World Cup) in full and then also a highlights version. Every year volunteers devote hundreds of hours to rehearsals, costume preparation, float creation, and fundraising. Although a highlights version makes for good TV, this event is first and foremost a community event. You would have had a significant number of people watch an extended version if you had broadcast it. Next year, I would be most impressed if you would take up this constructive feedback and play two versions of the Mardi Gras Parade. Yours sincerely, Michael Whitbread
