Pentecost 27 - Day 231 - Sunday in church - Christ the King - November 24 - Jeremiah 23:1-6; Psalm 46; Colossians 1:11-20; Luke 23:33-43 Woe to the shepherds who destroy and scatter the sheep of my pasture! says the Lord. Therefore thus says the Lord, the God of Israel, concerning the shepherds who shepherd my people:It is you who have scattered my flock, and have driven them away, and you have not attended to them. So I will attend to you for your evil doings, says the Lord. (Jeremiah 23:1-2 NRSV) Life was miserable for the people of Judah. Their leaders, king and civil magistrates were not faithful to God. They used their power to satisfy themselves. They did not rule the people wisely. They were more concerned about the maintaining of their power and authority then serving the people. When I was much younger, I believed the lessons about America. We were a country set apart. A country where there was liberty and justice for all. At school, we began each morning by standing next to our wooden desks, right arm crossed over our hearts and said the Pledge of Allegiance. Following the Pledge we would sing My Country Tis of Thee or America the Beautiful or The Star Spangled Banner. We had a young president with a beautiful wife. He was a war hero. We all loved war heroes. Now those memories come back to haunt me. They haunt me like a curse. Is a dream a lie if it dont come true? Or is it something worse? (Bruce Springsteen - The River) Today, I place my hope in God. I place my hope in Christ, Jesus Christ the righteous king, the righteous Branch. Placing ones hope in human leaders is an invitation to disappointment. The lead story in yesterdays Salt Lake Tribune was about the disgraced former Attorney General of Utah, John Swallow. From the get go, it turns out, he was a law breaker. The top cop of Utah could not keep the law himself. Utah Attorney General John Swallow concealed his interests in several businesses and failed to list nearly $60,000 in payments on his candidate disclosure forms — each offense a violation that, before his resignation Thursday, could have disqualified him from office. sltrib/sltrib/news/57168419-78/swallow-report-rawle-attorney.html.csp Today, we celebrate Christ the King. He is the one I am willing to call my leader. He is the one I find worth following. He is the one whom I am privileged to call my Lord, and my God. **Tomorrow - Day 232, November 25, Jeremiah 4-6; Psalm 49; 2nd Timothy 2**
