People Who Changed The Internet .... 1. Vint Cerf and Bob Kahn: Father of the Internet Think of a computer, a laptop or a notepad and the first thing that comes to mind is the internet. Though the computer was invented in the 1940s and the internet in the 1960s, it was not until Vint Cerf and Bob Kahn came forth with the TCP/IP suite of communication protocols in the 1970s that internet became widely used and popular. Since the invention of TCP/IP suite, a language that is used by computers to talk to each other in a network, the world of the internet has evolved and is today one of the most widely used means of communication 2. Tim Berners-Lee: Inventor of WWW Born on the 8th of June in 1955, Sir Timothy John Tim Berners-Lee is widely known for the invention of World Wide Web (WWW). In 2004, he was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II for his pioneering work in the field of the internet world. Tim Berners-Lee is an English computer scientist and an MIT professor. In March 1989 he made a proposal for an information management system. However it was only on 25 December 1990, along with Robert Cailliau and a young student at CERN that he implemented the first successful communication between a Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) client and server via the Internet. 3. Ray Tomlinson: Father of Email Today, the email is one of the best means of communication for its safety and speed and is widely used across the globe for the purpose. And this is all thanks to programmer Ray Tomlinson, the Father of Email who made it possible to exchange messages between machines in diverse locations. He came up with the “@” symbol format for e-mail addresses and today, over a billion people around the world type @ sign every day to communicate with one another. 4. Scott Fahlman: The first emoticon: :-) and :-( two of the most popular and commonly used emoticons in the internet world today. Known as the first ASCII-based smiley emoticon, they were created by Scott Fahlman as he thought it would help to distinguish between posts that should be taken humorously and those of a more serious nature. And since this first emoticon came in the 1982, people around the world use them on a regular basis, be it to chat, mail or message. 5. Marc Andreessen: Netscape Navigator While the internet has become a fascination with at the world, imagine if you could not navigate from one page to another but had to open a different window for every site. That would be rather irritating. And this is where Marc Andreessen comes in. Marc Andreessen revolutionized Internet navigation when he came up with first widely used Web browser called Mosaic. It was later commercialised as the Netscape Navigator. 6. Jarkko Oikarinen: Internet Relay Chat, IRC Online chatting is today one of the most common and popular means of communication via the internet and this has been widely possible due to the invention of Internet Relay Chat (IRC) created by Jarkko Oikarinen. IRC was created August 1988 to replace a program called MUT (MultiUser Talk) on a BBS called OuluBox in Finland. However, this real time online chatting took off in 1991 when Iraq invaded Kuwait and radio and TV signals were shut down, making IRC the only means to communicate. 7. Ward Cunningham: The first Wiki Howard G. Ward Cunningham, an American computer programmer is considered as the inventor of the software of the Wiki website which enables people to collaborate, create and edit online pages together. Born on May 26, 1949, Ward Cunningham started the Wiki website on March 25, 1995, naming it after the Hawaiian word for “quick”. 8. Sabeer Bhatia: Hotmail HTML – the language used to write the base of a webpage was created when Hotmail’s uppercase letters spelled HTML. Today, HTML is used in all webpages thanks to Sabeer Bhatia who founded the hotmail, the first free emailing services. However, he sold off Hotmail to Microsoft for USD 400 million. In 1998, Bhatia was awarded the “Entrepreneur of the Year” by Draper Fisher Jurvertson and was noted by TIME as one of the “People to Watch” in international business in 2002. 9. Larry Page and Sergey Brin: Google Google, the search engine of the internet world, is hailed by many regarding it their favourite site – hardly anything one does not get on it. A search site that changed the way people use and search on the intenet, Larry Page and Sergey Brin are the men behind Google. Google began in January 1996 as a research project by Larry Page and Sergey Brin when they were both PhD students at Stanford University in California. And since then Google has grown rapidly every year. 10. Bill Gates: Microsoft Bill Gates is a name to reckon with in the world of computer and the internet. Gates founded the software company called “Micro-Soft” or “Microsoft”, as one commonly writes it, a combination of “microcomputer software.” Later on, he developed a new GUI (Graphical User Interface) for a disk operating system which he called Windows. He had a dream of putting “a computer on every desk and in every home” and today, at least in the developed countries, one could say that Gates has achieved his dreams. 11. Steve Jobs: Apple The name Steve Jobs often brings to mind iPads, iPods, iTunes, products that are associated with him and Apple Inc. however, it was his innovative idea of a personal computer that led him into revolutionizing the computer hardware and software industry. While there are no doubts that he changed the way people listen to music and the world of digitalized music, Jobs also changed the way we work, play and communicate through his computers. The way he has made the simple and uncluttered web design stylish is a different story altogether. 12. Jimmy Wales: Wikipedia Wikipedia is the world’s largest encyclopaedia which carries articles and information on almost any topic or issue across the globle. Launched in 2001, the Wikipedia was founded by Jimmy Wales. Born on August 7, 1966, Jimmy Wales is American Internet entrepreneur who was named by Time magazine in 2006 list of world’s most influential people for his creation of the Wikipedia. An interesting feature of the Wikipedia is that it can be easily edited by anyone who can access the website. Source: Information Tech.
