People always ask me if Im vegan because Im Buddhist. No, actually - TopicsExpress

People always ask me if Im vegan because Im Buddhist. No, actually I became vegan first, then a Buddhist (though I was supposedly born a Buddhist, but I dont think anyone can be born into any religion, I chose it myself after careful thinking) Buddhist teachings support the values I already hold dear to me, therefore I decided to be a Buddhist to further learn more about compassion & wisdom. I think its dangerous to have blind faith & do something just because your religion says so. Even though Buddhism advocates vegetarianism, respecting lives & compassion for all sentient beings, I am quite sure I would make excuses for myself & continue eating animals if I didnt understand how bad factory farming/killing really is. Buddhism supports what I already know & practise, & further strengthens my motivation to stay vegan. In fact, I coincidentally learned about the five precepts (1st being no killing) just a few days before I made up my mind to go meat-free. I felt it was wrong to preach not to kill but pay someone else to kill, I dont want the bad karma but Im selfishly okay with someone else doing the dirty job for me..? Buddhism did start me thinking, but is not the only reason I am vegan :)
