People always get the Singularity wrong. But--notably, its now being taken seriously. As recently as a few years ago, people scoffed at the idea of super-intelligent AI, or claimed it was 100 years away. But now the worlds leading scientists and entrepreneurs are taking the advent of intelligent machines more seriously than even Ray Kurzweil could have anticipated. The fact that theyre scared means--if nothing else--theyre pretty sure its going to happen. The machines are definitely coming for us, will take our jobs, and will exceed our intelligence. By that time, we will have had to adapt, and many of us will already have machine augmentation in our bodies and brains. We may turn from individual workers into team leaders of software and hardware bots. The bigger problems will be sociopolitical. How will we distribute productivity gains? How will we use all the free time we gain from having machines doing an increasing share of labor? Who will make decisions on machine ethics? Since machines will be doing everything faster and better than we could, that means they could destroy the environment more quickly, fight deadlier wars, or promote sustainability and keep the peace. Who will decide? Its not AIs we should fear, but the hijack of human political systems to nefarious ends. We cant control the super wealthy with todays technology. What will we do as the oligarchs unavoidably become the first to acquire and direct the vast new skill sets AI will employ?
