People always say he seems to prefer to hang out with whites instead of black people. This is not the case. I hang out with persons who have similar interests. When I found punk, metal, and the like, what drew me to it was that it talked about the issues I was going through. Mainstream slave ship hop, however, just talked about money, disrespected women, and getting stuff. I wasnt and still am not attracted to that message. As a result, I hung out with people with the same interests, whom, for the most part were white. Only a few black and Latino kids where into the same things as I was. When I started talking about libertarian socialism, workers movements, waged slavery, and seizing community control of the means of production to uplift the community, these ideas went right over their heads. Oddly enough, these are the ideas espoused by the original black panthers, MOVE, and Malcolm X. But as soon as someone wanted to talk about the new Jordans or some other superficial bullshit, they were all in. Even when I got into hip-hop it was dead prez, public enemy, Vinnie Paz, Mos Def, Jurassic 5, and other socially and politically conscious artists that caught my attention. When I used to go see artists like I Self Devine, Brother Ali, or Immortal Technique, sadly, Im normally only 1 of maybe 10 African Americans in attendance. Its like our people gravitate away from the message that will restore our community because it calls for hardwork. Also, it doesnt matter what color anyone is. If I have stuff in common with them, we can hang out. If we dont have anything in common, why should we be friends? I mean damn, I dont hang out with anyone who takes mainstream hip hop seriously. And if thats the way youre trying to live, regardless of color, we just cant be friends. Because Im vehemently against what you stand for. Your skin color has nothing to do with it!
