People always surprise me. I met a very friendly Maori woman working in my local cafe. We spoke briefly this afternoon and there is a project she is working on that I may be of some assistance with, and I said so. She said Thats really interesting, when I take a break Ill sit down and speak with you. So I waited, I would have been there anyway since Ive been sitting here answering email correspondence. Then she left without a word or a acknowledgement. I think shes been in England too long already. Theres a welsh fella here I lent a solar light to for the Glastonbury festival. I said Its a festival. If you lose it, ok. First time he saw me afterwards he apologised for not returning it. Then each time he saw me he became more hostile and rude towards me. I thought this was really funny. He was unconsciously blaming me for his forgetting the light and feeling bad about it. I saw him yesterday out of the corner of my eye & realised he had seen me so was getting uptight. So I went up to him and said You know, its ok if Im not here when you return the light, you can just leave it with the cafe staff. I thought it better that he return the light and stop resenting my presence. Today he returned the light to me, and he was much more relaxed for doing so. My father used to say to me Ive lost so many friends lending money to them. They walk the other side of the street rather than face their own discomfort, their own lack of integrity. Id rather forget the money and have them say hello. Dont lend people money. They will hate you for it. People here are funny like that, they speak without meaning all the time. Im still too Irish in my ways, I tend to believe people mean what they say. So Im constantly hitting the wall of believing people and then seeing different. My older brother used to call me naive. Id ask him why Because you believe people mean what they say. Maybe he was right. But Id rather believe in people than believe everyone is a fake. My brother didnt believe in anyone. Didnt trust anyone to keep their word. To mean what they say. To me thats sadder than getting it wrong.
