People are asking... A couple of common ones: were, where, and were; and theyre, their, and there. Lets do the latter first, as I think its easier. Theyre is a conjunction. It means they are. Thats all it means. Their is a possessive. Thats all it is. There is an adverb or an exclamation. The keys you misplaced are over there! There, there, well find your watch, young lady. Mohegan Sun? Theyre celebrating their anniversary by going there. Were is also a conjunction. It means we are. Thats all it means. Where is an adverb that means at or in what place, to what place, and when or at what point. Were is a bit more complicated. It is the second person singular and plural and the first person and third person past indicative of be. (Dont panic! Basically, if you cant use were or where, use were.) Were going where? Oh, I thought we were going to the moon. Here comes the wrench. Were is also the subjunctive of be. The subjunctive (or conditional) tense is disappearing, but I love it and refuse to let go. Can you imagine Tevye singing out: If I was a rich man... ya da ya da ya da, etc.? Neither can I. Sushi tonight. Tomorrow I may switch to punctuation. Nice to mix it up a bit, yes?
