People are asking me about my Top 10 Films of 2014. Honestly... there werent 10 films that I saw that I liked enough to put on any kind of list, much less a Top 10 of the year. Imo, most American films have devolved into giant, explodey bits of nonsense featuring guys in their underwear running around doing ridiculously destructive things to their CG environment. While I did enjoy things like GUARDIANS, CHEF, and EDGE OF TOMORROW, nothing really rocked my world this year except for one film: the superlatively executed - albeit paper-thinly plotted - actioner JOHN WICK. Yes... the entire films set-up was easily condensed into a trailer, but... the action, imo, redefines what American action should be. Taking cues from THE RAID films and the Baa-Ram-Ewe produced Thai films, JOHN WICK follows what HK cinema has know for years: you gotta pull the camera back so the audience can see - and comprehend - whats going on. So yeah... gonna stick with the one film this year and HIGHLY recommend you see it. *WARNING*: the clip below offers some minor spoilers.
