People are at the heart of everything we do. I shared a few stories in my speech at Parliament today… One of them was Ms Jeyanthi. While visiting relatives over the weekend, she saw an elderly Chinese man who looked malnourished and was carrying a luggage bag. Worried that he was homeless, she approached him and asked in Mandarin, but was ignored. She then got a passerby to ask in Hokkien, and the elderly replied that he had a home and did not need assistance. But she was not convinced and asked again. The elderly gave the same reply. After he walked off, she asked the passerby who lived in the area to help keep a lookout and to call her if he saw the elderly man in the same condition again. The passerby later found out that she is a SSO officer, and wrote a letter to me. He commended Ms Jeyanthi for truly caring for the pioneer generation not just through policies and schemes, but with her whole heart. Another story was Ms Sujeeta, a social worker who met a girl with self-harm behaviour. Sujeeta tried to persuade the girl to seek professional help at IMH. Although the girl was reluctant, she kept trying. Eventually, she managed to admit the girl into the IMH observation ward at 11pm. Ms Sujeeta went beyond the call of her duty and stayed beside the girl until 5am to ensure that the girl felt safe and comfortable so that she could seek the necessary treatment. At the end of the day, it’s the people who matter most. Our last mile delivery is all about the people; not just the beneficiaries, but also the people who implement the policies and deliver the services. app.msf.gov.sg/PressRoom/COS2014OpeningSpeechbyMrChanChunSing.aspx app.msf.gov.sg/PressRoom/ClosingSpeechbyMrChanChunSingforCOS2014.aspx
