People are hardwired to adapt to their surroundings, evidently to survive. During the past seventy-two hour ceasefire, we have not had daily air raids, nor rockets exploding overhead and more importantly, people have not been killed. I am somewhat disturbed by how quickly I have adapted to the calm, really not giving a lot of thought to the issues I have been so intensely involved since this war started. I am disturbed because I can see how easy it is to forget and in that forgetting, we allow terrible choices to be made in the future. In forgetting, we also leave behind those who are still wounded, physically and psychologically. War is interesting for awhile, then it ends and all is back to normal, as if there arent people lying in hospitals still, or under the ground. It puzzles me tremendously. The current ceasefire between Gaza and Israel ends Monday at midnight. It has been strangely easy to simply forget the atrocities that have been going on as recently as last week during this lull. I pray that the ceasefire will be indefinitely extended, as is written about in this article: Egyptian diplomats: Trying to persuade sides to continue truce until final agreement reached Roi Kais Published: 08.17.14, 08:04 / Israel News Egyptian diplomats told the Turkish news agency Anatolia that Egypt is making efforts to persuade the two sides to resume the ceasefire until a final agreement is reached, rather than extend the ceasefire for a specified period of time. According to the diplomats, the Egyptian mediators are striving to make the ceasefire permanent. One of them explained: We wish to prevent the spilling of blood of the Palestinian people. We have a real desire to end the crisis. If we had a choice, we would have extended the ceasefire indefinitely, but the obstacle is the fear of the Palestinian side that its demands will not be met, while Israel will feel safe when the ceasefire comes into effect.
