People ask me Why do you oppose busking licenses? Surely its no big deal to get permission from the council to play music. It will stop people who arent very good or who annoy others from being able to play My answer is that in a genuinely free society, people dont have a right not to be annoyed or offended by others. State regulation of freedom of expression is censorship whether it is the licensing of journalists, writers or lowly buskers. If a busker is causing a genuine noise nuisance or blocking the highway then deal with them for that reason. You dont like their music? Tough. You dont like the cut of their jib? Tough. Youd rather the high street was sanitised and homogenised? Double tough. Freedom of expression is much more important than your objections to buskers. See you in Camden baby.
