People have a lot to say about the ASL Ice Bucket - TopicsExpress

People have a lot to say about the ASL Ice Bucket Challenge. Some love the idea and all the awareness its generating. Others look at most of the participation in the meme and feel its superficial. Are some people participating in the challenge just because its fun and trendy? Sure they are, but so what? If you talk to the Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis Association theyll tell you they couldnt be happier with the results, the awareness and the donations. The beauty of the ASL Ice Bucket Challenge is that in the end everyone wins. * People who are looking to be part of a trend get to join in on the fun. * Folks who feel the challenge is another example of slacktivism get an opportunity to push people to dig deeper than just dumping ice on their head. * And people who want to make a greater impact get to donate money and support ASL research. Non profits have such a hard time raising money. And, more importantly, they have such a hard time starting a conversation about what they do and why its important. Is it bad or good that a trendy internet meme helped this foundation achieve both of these goals? I have a feeling that most research foundations and nonprofits would really appreciate getting as much as attention as ASL is getting right now.
