People have accusingly asked me, upon hearing that I am atheistic, if I want to create some science religion, and my answer, obviously, was no, as those two things do not correlate in the slightest. However, Im giving it a bit of thought, and if Im honest, I can only see positives thus far in our species revering knowledge about existence as our Master - if one is necessary - devoting ourselves to the pursuit of information for its own sake, to enable the formation of the Just City on a foundation of as much rectitude as is acquirable. Am I naive in this? What would the state of the world today be, if everyone swapped belief in whatever deity might be theirs, and traded it in for a reverence for knowledge, and for the scientific method? I cant help but long for the day. I feel like I see its beginnings in great educators like Carl Sagan, Bill Nye and Neil DeGrasse Tyson. Im sure they would shy away from being mentioned alongside the formation of any religion, but in this case, I believe it may be warranted. These teachers spread knowledge of the known universe with charismatic approachability, encouraging you to listen and learn, much like great religious orators like Malcolm X and Martin Luther King Jr., and though they may not seem it, fight for something just as important as civic human rights; the pursuit of a life lived upon rectitude. So, do you know what? Though I shant be the one to found it, I think I do support the idea of a religion of science. It will fulfill peoples need to be part of a group, it will whet their sense of awe and wonder, and it will preserve our species place on the planet.
