People... ignore this media scaremongering about the Facebook Messenger app permissions (video from Fox News, no surprise there). In the age of the smartphone, apps are king. In order to be the best, the app must do more than any of its rivals. In order to do more, more permissions are needed. That is how apps work. FAQ: Q. Why do they need to be able to access my pgones camera? A. Youve provably been sending pictures to your friends, directly from the app, for ages. Its always had access to your camera, you just didnt read the permissions before. Facebook isnt constantly taking pictures of the inside of your pocket/bag. You are safe Q. Why does it need access to my microphone? A. Whilst few people have ever sent voice messages before, it has also always been a permission, for this reason. However they now allow you to do Skype-style calls and these would suck without access to the microphone. Q. Why does it need access to my contacts? A. Everyone I know syncs their contacts list and Facebook friends. It is easier to find your friends on Facebook this way and it puts them in your phonebook for you. This has always been a permission and, so far, Facebook hasnt called anyone I know. Q. Why does it need access to my internal and SD storage? A. Youve been sending pictures and videos to your friends, via the app, for ages. This has also always been a permission Q. Im worried that Facebook is spying on me. A. You are paranoid. What would they have to gain from this? What aspect of your lives do you not already put on your Facebook profile? It does not need an app to spy on you, you give all your information willingly already. Q. What should I do if Im still worried about Facebook, or anyone else for that matter, knowing everything about my personal life? A. Log off the internet. Get rid of all electronic devices. Move to the most remote corner of the planet, that you can find, and live in a cave. Definitely dont share that concern on Facebook, the very media site that you are concerned about communicating with; or are you looking for a special award in irony? That is all.
