“People in Liverpool dont move very far, you know.” –Ringo Starr This audiovisual tour de force, that purports to be a documentary on Liverpool, is the next film I’d provide as an exhibit while testifying about the magical possibilities of the documentary genre. Terence Davies paints a picture of his relationship with the city, where he spent the first 28 years of his life, in what is an intimately personal and deeply poignant portrait on one hand and a savagely funny and wickedly irreverent social and political sketch on the other. Relying on brash proclamations and subtle subtext in equal measure, Davies talks inter alia about his experience of growing up poor, his homoerotic urges and the accompanying guilt, his romance with culture, and his falling out with God. The narrative, that can best be described as stream of consciousness poetry, is delivered in a tone that is drenched in erudition, and is interwoven with a majestic soundtrack featuring Sibelius, The Hollies, Bruckner, Shostakovich, Peggy Lee, The Beatles, and Mahler. A true masterpiece. “We love the place we hate, then hate the place we love. We leave the place we love, then spend a lifetime trying to regain it.” –Terence Davies
