People in Open Palms Today I was reminded of a very important lesson as I left one of the men closest to me at the airport leaving for Australia as a missionary with his family. Life is about transience. This makes us incredibly uncomfortable because we covet certainty and stability, but transience is the natural state of all life, from the change of seasons, to the move from life to death, we live in extended state of transience. Relationships are perhaps the most difficult to embrace transience. We cling, we grasp, we fear loss and change. We hold one another with tight grasp. When we grip one another, we demand that you exist to provide me with all I need! When transience happens it is seen as a threat, a failure of grip, a deep and penetrating loss that threatens my place in the world. We grow angry, discouraged, and cynical. But what if we are to hold one another in open palms, that is a tender hold, one that treasures the sharing of each and every moment not as a demand but as a gift from God. The open palm keeps people always before God realizing we do not control one another but all are at the mercy and purpose of God. Relationships are not static security but dynamic blessing. When transience happens it is a changing of seasons, an opening to the coming of a new season. That new season brings new hope and new experiences! My love for my friend has not changed, though so much has and will. We will enter this new season, exploring the dynamic blessings that will come with change. We have held one another with open palms and now celebrate the transience of Gods ongoing plan and not fearing the loss of proximity. We will allow God to redefine the parameters of our relationship and the hope of what will be, allowing these 12 years to always remain a testimony to the dynamic blessings of God.
