People in our culture have a disposable attitude toward everything. They want their cake and eat it, too. They impulsively buy/adopt a pet, dont provide proper health care or training for it, and then surrender it back to the rescue they adopted it from or to a local animal shelter after a year or two when theyre tired of it. And they expect that rescue or shelter to be able to place their sick, untrained, aggressive animal-- how is that fair!?! Even when people are told that due to the dogs issues or a shelter being full that their pet is likely to be euthanized, in most cases the owner will still walk away and leave them there! The rescues/shelters worry that if they do not accept the animals then they could be turned loose, abandoned or abused. I have personally dealt with cases of animals being tossed over a fence (breaking a leg), tied out/ abandoned and intentionally poisoned. People are insane sometimes.... So, rescues/shelters can sometimes feel it is their responsibility to the *animal* to take it in, even if that means having to humanely euthanize it based on behavior problems or because there are not enough homes. Because Flirting with Fido is a limited admission rescue we do not euthanize dogs for space. We are committed to providing care and placing all the animals that come through our rescue. However that means that we are forced to turn away dogs when we dont have the funds or foster homes to provide them with acquitted care and placement. Open door shelters on the other hand are committed to providing a place for EVERY homeless and unwanted animal THEY COME ACROSS whether they have space for it or not. This unfortunately means animals have to be euthanized. Yes. the pet overpopulation problem is shameful and frustrating but all these people who are no doubt going to give me a thumbs down and think its the fault of rescues or shelters need to sit in the receiving room of a shelter or rescue and listen to what you hear. The dog chewed my furniture, peed on the floor, tried to escape our yard, growled at the mailman, were moving, we had a litter and it was an accident, the kids are grown and we really dont want a dog, weve just gotten a new job, etc. etc. Time to quit pointing the finger at the rescues and shelters who are trying to help these dogs and start pointing the finger at adopters/owners. We should all be pressuring each other to sterilize all pet dogs and cats, train them and provide adequate medical care. We should pressure those who allow their pets to have accidental litters to take responsibility for their pets, getting them all spayed and neutered. We should not coo at their cute puppies and kittens, and everybody who surrenders a pet should have to work in a high kill shelter for a day! Maybe THAT will get through to people. In conclusion, your animal needs you! Please rise to the challenges so that your family can remain intact, human and companion animal. Many people seem to decide to discard an animal in a fit of rage or frustration, robbing their companion animal of the thought and care which they require. Please make your final decision carefully, exhausting all reasonable steps. His or her life may very well depend on you! In closing (getting off my soap box ;) ) Be realistic, use your common sense when dealing with rescues & shelters and think ahead, these people work very hard to get animals placed, waiting until the last minute or until its too late to find your pet a new home or to deal with its issues adds more stress on to them as well as you and your pet!
