People might wonder whats with my obsession with Lou Gehrig, aside from the fact he is one of THE BEST Yankee players and ball players of all time. I respect athletes that are great at what they do. Im not a big Jordan or LeBron fan but I respect they are great at what they do. Lou was great! What makes me, decades later as someone who never got to watch him play while he was alive, respect his greatness even more is the fact I know it wasnt easy his last season. You see I, as a ball player myself, know the type of skill it takes to be that great, but I also know the havoc amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS better known as Lou Gehrigs Disease) wrecks on your nerve cells in your brain and spinal cord. My uncle was diagnosed with ALS and barely lived a year after diagnosis. For a man to play at Lous level with the onset of a disease that TO THIS DAY IS UNCURED, UNCONTROLABLE, and a death sentence (after diagnosis most ppl have 2-5 years to live) ... This man along with every other ALS patient and family gets my respects. Friends, so many people know abt cancer, AIDS, heart disease, even Alzheimers is making progress ... I urge you to take a few moments and educate yourselves about this disease because every 90 minutes someone in the Unites States is being diagnosed with it and at the same time every 90 minutes some will die from it.
