People not familiar with the history and vagaries of that region would do well to remember this: 1)Putin has lamented the loss of Crimean Peninsula for a decade 2) He knew that it a matter of time before Ukraine exploded again as it did in 2004 3) Crimea will now be in the Russian sphere regardless of its status. The rest is just propaganda, politics, and noise. He has learned from the best - Stalin and Hitler and he executed perfectly. Alas, the very demonstrating people 10 years from now will find themselves isolated as a Russian backwater, recognized by Russia (and maybe Belarus), lacking any foreign investment, and economically with a half of GDP of their counterparts in Ukraine. Just look at the history of Cyprus partition, Kaliningrad region, Abkhazia, etc.
