People of Bengaluru should be ashamed of themselves regarding this exploitation. More than 200 pourakarmikas in just 3 wards are not being paid for the last 3 months. This is the 7th time they are going on strike demanding their paltry salaries in less than a year. Their numbers may be in thousands throughout the city. It seems to me that Bengaluru lacks a soul to behave so inhumanely. Majority of the women who were on strike today wont weigh more than 40 Kgs. These are the people who clear the filth in the city by their bare hands. They are supposed to be paid Rs 8436. Since BBMP has outsourced the whole thing they get less than 4000 and that too intermittently. Shameless. These people live in slums and they keep our city clean and we dont even pay them for a decent meal. Instead we abuse and laugh at them and exploit them. This is not the way a civilized society behalves Pourakarmikas of Byatarayanapura (which is represented by none other than Krishna Bhyregowda, who also happens to be a minister of cabinet rank in the state government) are on strike for the last 4 days. Nobody bothered. Today we from AAP went and supported them and requested the police to ask the local corporators and BBMP officials to come. We waited for 3 hours on the side of the road and nobody cared. Then when we tried to sit on the road the local police manhandled us. If it wasnt for the women, police would have treated us much badly. Now the Pourakarmikas have agreed to give time till Saturday noon for the payment and called off the strike at 5 pm. If they are not paid by then there will be a huge protest on Sunday.
