People of Punjab seem tired of Sharif brothers’ prolong rule. - TopicsExpress

People of Punjab seem tired of Sharif brothers’ prolong rule. Even in human relations a stage comes when people get fed up and want a break from each other, or breakup a relationship altogether. Sometime it feels that nothing works in such situations. Nawaz Sharif appears to be in this situation in politics. Only sincere, innovative and meaningful initiatives/policies can help him. In a personal relationship one person, who does not want to part ways, wonders what went wrong. He/she tries everything to keep the relationship but the other side does not appreciate the efforts. Aggressive push and empty promises to keep the relationship can further exacerbate the situation because the one who wants to breakup is either driven by accumulated anger or there is a new love in sight. If it is just anger by removing causes of the anger through sincere and honest efforts, trust can be restored but if one partner has found a new love only experience can teach them a good or bad lesson. The fact is that the current crisis is storm in a cup of tea. Nawaz Sharif was not in government during the May 2013 elections therefore technically he can’t be held responsible for any wrongdoings in those elections. Moreover so far there is little evidence of large scale rigging in the May 2013 elections. An inquiry into the May 2013 elections is likely to conclude that. Unlike past, this time, as Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif’s performance is better than his previous two tenures (1990-1992 and 1997-1999). Now Mr. Sharif is also a transformed leader with vision. He is mature and serious. He is making concrete efforts to rebuild Pakistan’s economy and deal with other challenges and issues that confront Pakistan. Nawaz Sharif is non-confrontational, too. He wants peace with Pakistan’s neighbors and he is launching long-term infrastructure development projects that will benefit Pakistan in long term. If he is allowed to continue at the end of his term Pakistan should be in better shape. Similarly, Shahbaz Sharif is a competent and hardworking administrator and leader. He has converted Lahore into one of the most beautiful cities of Pakistan. Indeed Lahore is modern Pakistan’s face. Now Shahbaz is focusing on the development of Rawalpindi and other cities. Also Shahbaz Sharif is the only Chief Minister who is using the authority given to the provinces in the 18 Amendment. Under new powers now provincial governments are allowed to directly contact foreign governments, donors and businesses and bring direct foreign investments, projects or loans. But despite their new role and positive policies, the past seems to be haunting the Sharif brothers. They used power and politics for expanding their business empire; they introduced unethical practices in politics such as horse-trading and buying political loyalties. Nawaz Sharif didn’t treat Mohammed Khan Jenajo well. Benazir Bhutto, Asif Ali Zardari and other political opponents were victimized under Nawaz Sharif nose in his previous governments. Also in the 1980s and 90s, Nawaz Sharif could not resolve peoples’ problems at gross root level. But then he was leading the anti-Bhutto camp, the establishment and its protégée media had ignored sins of Nawaz Sharif. Then came 1999 when Nawaz Sharif was bitten by a group of generals, he realized what Bhuttos had gone through. Perhaps this realization transformed Nawaz Sharif. He signed the Charter of Democracy and changed his political discourse. By doing so he became a bad guy in the eyes of the military. Consequently, few generals launched Imran Khan to punish Nawaz Sharif, who is now portrayed as a symbol of corruption. Ironically, Imran Khan does not have alternative plans and policies for complex and serious challenges that Pakistan faces. Imran is more talk less substance. He does not have vision, team or policies. Imran has failed in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa but even so he is likely to gain in Punjab because he is hitting and hurting Nawaz Sharif. Imran, however, is a good marketing manager who can sell his product and services. But grass looks green from distance, the people of Khyber pakhtunkhwa are finding that reality under the PTI provincial government but the people of Punjab have yet to go through the similar experience.
